Why the number of ratings matters here
251 ratings is not an impression. It is enough for the good mornings and the bad ones to have cancelled each other out, which is exactly why the number printed on it is 4.5 and not a five. For comparison, one more one-star rating would take the 5.0 on the dearest product to 4.0 and the 4.9 on the small-group tour to 4.5, while this one would stay at 4.5. One caveat on that sum. A published average is rounded to a single decimal place, so the true total behind it cannot be worked out from the outside, and these figures treat the rounded number as exact. Robin and Blanche both describe a pickup and both describe time to wander at each stop. The itinerary for your departure is on the booking panel, and the second half is the interesting one. “plenty opportunity to enjoy the missions on your own” and “gave us time at each to explore ourselves” are two customers describing the same thing: at a park with no entrance gate and no ticket, the guide can simply let you loose and collect you afterwards.
Susan’s is the one that says what the commentary is for. “we were not familiar with much of Texas’ history” is most visitors, and the missions do not explain themselves at the wall. Seven of these ten reviews use the word knowledgeable about a guide. The Park Service also runs free ranger-guided walks, capped at fifty people each, first come first served — the current schedule is on whether you need tickets at all.

Mission San Juan and Mission Espada need a car, a bike or a tour. That is the case for this product in one paragraph: it exists to solve the southern half of the park. If you have a car, the four missions sit about two to three miles apart with free parking at every one of them, roughly fifteen minutes end to end on an average day.
